From Law Support to Supporting Small Businesses - An interview with Jacquelyn Dorsey
Updated: Nov 28, 2020
1. Tell me about yourself
This is a question that always creates a thousand thoughts in my mind. I’m Jacquelyn Dorsey but I go by Jacki or Jay. Born in Orlando, FL. I work as a Litigation Support for a medical malpractice firm out of Maitland, FL. I’m a Salesforce Certified Administrator and a trained Salesforce Essentials Advisor. A creative, small business owner, and oh did I mention that I’m a twin!
2. How did you first learn about Salesforce?
Thanks to my lucky stars for my cousin, Chamille Adams. She was my initial introduction to Salesforce. While talking she explained everything to me and told me that it was free to learn and my response was, what’s the catch? That night she emailed me my first Trailmix.
3. Describe your Salesforce journey and the role that HBCUforce has played in your journey.
Once I had a better feel and understanding of what Salesforce is, I wanted to connect with people locally so a friend of mine invited me to attend the Black Orlando Tech meetup about Salesforce which was led by Tiffany Spencer. After that introductory meetup, I was pretty much sold. Tiffany created a class that helped prep me for the administrator certification.
Working full-time, running a small business, and learning a new skill was challenging because if I’m being honest, at times I was just tired. But, I had a goal in mind and I was determined to obtain my administrator certification.
I have to say I’ve met some pretty awesome people and I’ve grown close to a lot of them. The study group that I was a part of was a major factor in making sure I stayed on track.
As a group we’re all striving for the same goal, we held each other accountable and we kept each other encouraged and for that, I am truly grateful.
HBCUForce has helped me not only with preparations for my administrator certification but it has also been a major help in providing me with projects that will help with obtaining hands-on experience.
4. Do you have any certifications?
I currently hold an Administrator Certification and I’m studying for the Platform App Builder Certification. My goal is to be 2X certified by the end of the year.
5. What advice do you have for anyone interested in joining the Salesforce ecosystem?
Go at a pace that is comfortable for you! There are a ton of resources that will help you in any and all categories, there are videos as well. I’m a big fan of “YouTube University”, Apex Hours administrator playlist was the best for me personally.
Google is your friend but if it something you're still having a hard time understanding, don’t hesitate to reach out to the community. The Salesforce Ohana is like none other that’s for sure.
There are so many different avenues Salesforce can take you so be open to exploring what interests you.
6. What’s next for you?
What’s next for me? I’m currently working towards my Platform App Builder Certification. I’m really interested in becoming a developer one day. But, as for now, my goal is to build more skills, dive deeper into gaining more consulting experience, and joining a company that lines up with my career goals.
7. Which Salesforce character do you relate to the most and why?
So I had to look this one up, I knew they had characters but I never looked at their descriptions. I would say that I can relate to Codey. I can say that I’m very much a person who likes to jump in and get things going. I’m the biggest cheerleader of my friends, I just love to see others win. I try my best to help others overcome their fears or whatever it is that’s holding them back from jumping.
